Overall, Hammurabi's code has made a major impact on society and laws as we know them. Today, we have many law enforcers, so we don't need harsh punishments. Military forces were always in battle in ancient Babylonia, so the harsh punishments would do what the military force could not: enforce rules and keep civilization in order. Punishments today are way less harsh than they were in Ancient Babylonia. Other times they would throw someone into water and see if they drowned or survived. For example, some punishments were left up to the gods. There were some laws that people didn't agree with, and aren't used today. It was the basis of many religious laws which you can read more about in my previous tab. Also, the code gave the idea of innocent until proven guilty. The code created a basis for today's law systems, particularly the court system, in which the suspect is judged and sentenced accordingly. ![]() ![]() Even though the laws were favored to rich and elite citizens, they were still meant to protect the weak from the strong. The laws were basically a constitution and even the government leaders had to follow these strict rules. Every law was written in stone and could not easily be changed. The organization and discipline of Hammurabi's Code has been replicated in many different cultures. Hammurabi's Code has left lasting effects on cultures over time. ![]()
